Toys have certainly changed since I was a kid. The latest phenomenon is Zhu Zhu Pets. If you’ve never seen one of these things up close and personal, go to a friend or family member who has one and just check them out.

Zhu Zhu hamster pets are robotic plush toys that have sensors built in that let them react to their environment. These toys seem to have artificial intelligence. They are able to play with other Zhu Zhu Pets and even with kids in a life-like manner. You can pick up one of these things and stroke it and watch as it responds to your touch.

The engineers who built these things must’ve played with hundreds of hamsters because they’ve got a lot of the mannerisms down. It seems that each Zhu Zhu Pet hamster has a programmed personality built-in with various settings such as Explorer mode and Loving mode. You can play with them, pet them and even watch them run around; that’s only half the fun.

Don’t forget to look for the Zhu Zhu Pets Adventure Ball along with the add-on garage. These anthropomorphic robot rodents have their own little cars that they zip around in. Be sure to leave plenty of room on the floor for little critters because they can move!

The sophisticated circuitry in these things makes them truly interactive. These are not just static plush toys that you squeeze and hold onto or sing lullabies to at night; these things are like real pets! Set them on loving mode and they are the cutest darn things in the world. Okay maybe not as cute as 10-day-old babies but as far as I can see, these toys are perfect for kids who are not quite ready to take care of real live pets.

The Zhu Zhu Hamsters come programmed with over 40 different sounds and can be quite vocal at times and when you get a few of these together, it’s like a zoo. You can watch these rodents play quite happily by themselves in the Go Go Pets hamster funhouse. Children can connect the interlocking components to extend the range of the hamster habitat.

Some of the toy accessories come with very small items. Although these are clearly marked as possible choking hazards for small babies, you should take note that the age range starts at three and up. At this time prices on the accessories have been stable but with the holiday season nearing, the Zhu Zhu Hamsters are going for steadily higher prices.

If you’ve been thinking about getting a pet for a young child who may not quite be ready, I would definitely recommend thinking about introducing the Zhu Zhu Pets first. They are very inexpensive but a whole lot of fun for you and the children. They represent an opportunity for learning to care for animals.
